Verse of the Day and Devotion
For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. – Psalm 48:14 NLT
Devotion
If you want to know what God is really like, then go and inspect the lives of His people. Don’t just rely on what you’ve heard from others, take a look for yourself. That’s what the psalmist told the people of his day that wanted to know about God. He said to them, “Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem.” (Psalm 48:13) He said that because he knew if they inspected Jerusalem they would be impressed. If they walked around it for a while, they would clearly see that God takes care of His people. He provides for them, feeds them, clothes them, shelters them, and protects them.
The same is true in our own day. God is still providing His people with everything they need. As our verse for today says, “He is our God forever and ever.” That is, He is the God of His people from of old and forevermore. He doesn’t come and go. He’s not here today and gone tomorrow. He looked after the people of Israel and He looks after us as well. We don’t have to worry about it. We don’t have to make any contingency plans in case He abandons us. All the other gods are fickle and unreliable. At bottom, they’re no-gods. Our God is not like them at all.
Indeed, our God is so concerned about us that He takes the time to guide us through life. He does this to make sure that our lives work out well, to make sure that we’re well provided for. True, we sometimes stray from the leading of His guidance and get ourselves into trouble. True, there are times when He has to discipline us in order to get us back on track. (Hebrews 12:1-12) But those are exceptional times. The general trajectory of our lives is moving ever forward and upward. If you inspect our lives, then you’ll find out for yourself.
Moreover, our God will be guiding us until we die. This doesn’t mean, of course, that He will not be guiding us in the life to come. It just means that in this life, in this life full of trials, troubles, and tribulations, He will guide us through it all until we get to the better life beyond.
Go ahead. Inspect our lives and find out for yourself!
