THE FLYOVER,

Monday, October 28, 2024,

Good Morning! On this day in 1886, the final rivet was driven during the dedication ceremony of the Statue of Liberty. New York City’s first-ever ticker tape parade celebrated the occasion.

Like millions of storm-seasoned Floridians, a bald eagle named Clive showed true grit during Hurricane Milton, white-knuckling it through fierce winds from his treetop perch.

TAKEOFF,

Trump Rally Hits Madison Square Garden,

Former President Donald Trump held a packed rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, drawing nearly 20,000 supporters inside and reportedly turning away tens of thousands more.

The six-hour event featured appearances by several high-profile guests, including Hulk Hogan, Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and a rare campaign appearance by former first lady Melania Trump.

Performers earlier in the rally included a comedian who drew extensive media criticism for ethnic and racial jokes. Trump’s campaign said the jokes didn’t reflect the views of the campaign.

During his speech, Trump announced a new policy proposal to support tax credits for family caregivers, outlined his immigration proposals, including enhanced deportation measures, and suggested legislation that would make burning the American flag punishable by one year in jail.

He concluded the rally with Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, expressing his desire to win the traditionally Democratic state.

Major Papers Drop Presidential Endorsements,

Significant internal upheaval erupted at The Washington Post after the paper withdrew its planned endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris Friday, just days after the same move at the Los Angeles Times.

The Post, founded over a century ago but only endorsing presidential candidates since 1976, has now announced it will permanently end its endorsements, leading to the resignation of editor-at-large Robert Kagan.

At the L.A. Times, similar tensions arose when editorial board head Mariel Garza and two other board members resigned after owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked the endorsement process.

This trend mirrors industry concerns about how endorsements affect public perception of news. In 2020, 44 newspapers chose not to endorse any candidate—nearly matching the 47 that endorsed Joe Biden.

American Dream Carries $4.4M Price Tag,

Living the American Dream will cost households $4.4 million, according to a new analysis.

The biggest expense is a comfortable retirement, estimated at nearly $1.6 million for a 20-year period.

Homeownership follows at $930,000 over a lifetime, while raising two children and funding their college education totals $832,000. Vehicle ownership rounds out major expenses at $811,000.

These costs exceed typical lifetime earnings, with men averaging $3.3 million and women $2.4 million over their careers.

POLITICS,

Political ad spending is increasingly shifting to streaming, with House super PACs investing nearly $70 million on digital platforms. Traditional TV, however, remains crucial, especially for live sports like NFL and MLB, to reach key demographics.

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman described former President Donald Trump’s impact in Pennsylvania as “astonishing,” comparing high-visibility sales of Trump merchandise to that of Taylor Swift.

Recent betting data from Star Sports shows 95% of bets favor former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, giving him 60% odds versus Harris’ 42%.
