Biden Sets Single-Day Clemency Record,

President Biden set a single-day clemency record Thursday, commuting the sentences of 1,500 Americans in home confinement and pardoning 39 people, the White House said.

The commutations were given to people serving their sentences under home confinement due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden said that those pardoned had demonstrated successful rehabilitation.

Biden also confirmed he would take additional steps in the coming weeks and continues to review clemency petitions.

The previous single-day clemency record was held by former President Barack Obama, who approved 330 requests shortly before leaving office in 2017.

Winter Storm Blankets New York,

The third major lake-effect snowstorm in three weeks hit Great Lakes communities from Michigan to New York on Thursday, creating near-whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.

As much as a foot of snow fell in two hours during the morning hours in parts of New York, resulting in several school districts being closed, drivers being stranded after sliding off the roadways, and travel bans.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in several counties, anticipating feet of additional snowfall through the rest of the week.

Parts of Erie County in Western New York recorded up to 31.5 inches of snow, the highest snowfall in the state.

Americans Struggle to Pay Electric Bills,

A new study by LendingTree found that more than a third of Americans have reduced their spending or skipped household necessities at least once in the past year to pay for utility bills.

LendingTree cited the U.S. Census Bureau, reporting that electricity bills have increased by 2.6%, leaving 23.4% unable to pay part or all of their energy bills and 22.8% keeping their homes at an unhealthy or unsafe temperature.

Eight of the top 11 states with the highest percentage of residents struggling to pay energy bills are in the South, with Mississippi, Alabama, and Oklahoma leading in the number of people cutting essential expenses.

Connecticut, Arizona, and Texas had the highest average monthly electricity bills in the nation.

POLITICS,

The Justice Department’s Inspector General report, released Thursday, confirmed 26 FBI informants were present outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but only three were assigned to be there. It claimed that no assigned informants were directed to encourage bystanders to break the law.

The House approved a bill Thursday, 236-173, to create 66 federal court seats over the next decade, sending it to President Biden despite a veto threat. The Senate unanimously passed it in August.

President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, where he was greeted with chants of “U-S-A” and vowed to make the country more business-friendly.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened Wednesday to cut off energy supplies to the U.S. if President-elect Donald Trump enacts proposed tariffs on Canadian goods, saying it was his job “to protect Ontario.”
