My Emily

by: Matt Patterson

Love, Sacrifice, Hope… My Emily is a truly beautiful and inspiring story.

There are few things more difficult in this life than watching your own child suffer. It is a helplessness that nearly nothing else can match. And when you’re a dad committed to being the best dad you can be, the starkness of the reality of how little control over anything you really have is magnified a thousand percent. As you climb into the air transport with this dad, as you watch his little girl who is incredibly sick and wanting him to make it all better, you will know that helplessness.

If tragedy has struck your own life, you will remember again what that profound ache and terror feels like, and if you allow yourself, through this book, you will come one step closer to healing. This is a book as much about moving through a tragedy as healing from one. The intense confusion, deep anguish, and desperate need to do something in the face of life and death itself reminds us that we are not in control, and our children are ultimately in God’s hands, not ours.

Oh, we love them… how we love them. And we care for them as best we can… even being willing to walk through fire in order to save them. But ultimately they, just as we, are in God’s hands, and only He can bring us through profound tragedy into peace if we let Him. Through reading this story, it is also clear that we who have gone through a tragedy are not alone in our own confusion and helplessness, and somehow, that helps. It’s like God saying, “I don’t expect you to know what to do and how to do it. I only expect you to love… no matter what.”

The most incredible thing about this book is the hope it holds out even for those who lose the child they so dearly love. The hope of Heaven and the hope of using your deepest pain to help others. Matt and Bonnie Patterson are role models for every parent. Not because they knew what to do but because they loved so much, they were willing to do whatever they could in the midst of life throwing one curveball after another. And now in their wanting to use their experience to reach out and help others. That is true strength and character. That is what we should all want to be in this life: the change we want to see.

I wish I could adequately put into words how special this book is. All I can say is, “Read it. It is life-changing.”
