I’ve declared 2015 is the year I am going Pro.
I know, you’re scratching your head and wondering what in the world is she talking about. I am published so I am already a professional author. Surely, I am not taking up wrestling. Maybe golf?
No, I am going pro versus con. I want to scrape all the anti-, con, against, don’t like, hate words from my vocabulary. As I am going pro with my words and opinions, I am also going to think on and proclaim what is pure, lovely, or good report.
As the verse in Philippians states: 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever thingsare pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
This will be no easy task. More than I would like to admit, anti, hate words have exploded out of mouth. As my father, and I am sure many of your fathers have said. “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
If you are reading, watching, or in a conversation that is stirring the anti- words inside you, quit. Step away. Quote verses and proclaim what is true. You don’t have to put up with it. The trick is to stop the negative feelings and words before they grab hold of you.
We can do this. We can.
First step is to fill our minds with truth. That would be God’s word. Read it daily. Memorize verses that speak to your heart.
Next, fill your vocabulary with pro words. How many compliments have you given out lately? How many hateful words have you said about others? I would not like to see the percentages of the words coming out of my own mouth. But that is changing.
So what are some good words? In our dealings with others, what can we say that will lift them up? The more specific we are the better. Nice is well, just nice. And it’s better to compliment the inner person rather than just what you see.
Maybe their sweater is pretty, but how about their smile, bright eyes. Perhaps, they are friendly, well-spoken, well-read, honest, etc.
So let’s beef up on our good words. When you say an anti- word, grab a thesaurus and find the antonyms for that word. Beat the anti- word with the good ones. Search for something good to say about whatever caused you to resort to the negative.
We can become pros and the benefit will far outweigh the temporary gratification of spouting the negative.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Pro Year.
