Verse of the Day

Scripture

…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Loaded with 800 passengers, 16 crew members, and 10 tons of baggage, the giant new Airbus 380 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world. This plane is twice as long as a blue whale, as wide as a soccer field, and stands seven stories high. When fully loaded, the craft weighs over a million pounds.

As this monster taxis around the tarmac, those watching from a distance wonder with amazement how it could possibly become airborne. Approaching the runway before takeoff, the plane is already traveling at a decent speed; one would assume that the pilots would use that momentum toward the velocity needed for lift. But no, the plane comes to a full stop. Why?

The aircraft industry calls this maneuver “pause for power.” With brakes locked, the pilots engage the engines and steadily increase their thrust until they roar with maximum acceleration potential. Only then do they release the brakes and speed down the runway.

During the early 1500s, Martin Luther translated the Bible into German, the language spoken by his people. He risked his life by challenging Roman Catholic authority after nailing the infamous “95 Theses of Contention” to the Wittenburg Church door in 1517. Luther was quoted as saying, “If my day is only moderately busy, then I only pray for two hours in the morning. If my day is exceedingly busy, then I pray for four [hours].” Luther understood his need for Christ and his helplessness without Him.

We can take a lesson from Martin Luther, and from aeronautics. Our days and our lives are full of responsibilities, decisions, and challenges. We may be tempted to use whatever momentum that we’ve achieved to continue our assignments, but I encourage you to stop for a moment and earnestly seek the Lord’s direction and His anointing before proceeding. Pause for His power. We cannot prevail alone! Our strength, our wisdom, and our resources are vastly insufficient to successfully accomplish the demands placed upon us. The time that we spend in prayer should actually increase with a busy schedule!

Right now is an excellent time for us to focus and prepare for the rest of the day.
