“You got one thang right, Preacher,” the outlaw drawled with a sneer, “Men is gonna die ‘this hour’ ‘cause we’re gonna kill ‘em!” He paused for effect, spat a chaw of tobacco on the ground in front of Eli, and then added, “Ah thank we’ll start with you!” With that, he threw his rifle to his shoulder and fired … Eli didn’t so much as blink as the bullet ripped through his hat, but in the blink of an eye he drew his Remington 50/70 and fired. The outlaw staggered backwards, his blood-spattered face a picture of shock as the rifle fell from his unresponsive hands…Imagine a man who is a cross between a typical Southern Baptist minister and a typical Louis Lamour hero, and you’ll probably arrive at a pretty fair approximation of Eli Helmsman, the protagonist in this gritty but theologically infused western. Eli never went looking for violence, but he was bold to speak the truth as he saw it, and so sometimes violent men went looking for him…and more often than not, they ended up in boot hill. True to its title, this book endeavors to present a portrait of three kinds of people: sinners who think they’re good people, sinners who are unapologetically evil, and sinners who have recognized their own faults and been liberated by God’s forgiveness.
