My daughter loves to joke around. This girl is one of the funniest kids you will ever meet. She will make a brilliant stand up comic one day!
Her mother (me!) is way too serious and doesn’t naturally joke around.
Here I thought God may have played an April Fools Day joke in me. What He really did was balance me out and give me enough of a challenge that I would rely fully on Him. He gave me strength in my weakness and grace in my hyper seriousness.
Growing up, I couldn’t stand the first of April. April Fools Day used to be something I rued, something I braced myself for, a day I wanted to hide in a closet until all the jokes are done. Now that I learned that joking around is the way my daughter shows love, I plan for April Fools months in advance! One year, I froze her bowl of cereal. Another year, I made a candy “egg” for her breakfast. And another year, I drew faces on everything in the fridge: that one made her both jump in surprise and laugh her head off!
I’m so thankful that God taught me how to love in ways that were difficult for me. It had always been a stretch for me, to let my hair down and joke around a bit. But I cannot wait to see how she likes today’s prank!
