What is Your Calling?

Thanks to a young woman whose blog I follow, Danny and I watched another awesome movie. Based on a true story, the movie showcases the life of Maude Dowley Lewis, a prolific folk artist in Nova Scotia. She went to work for and subsequently married Everett Lewis and painted everything she could get her hands on, selling little cards for a quarter. In her later life she stayed in one corner of their simple tiny home and painted and painted, despite the increasing problems with the arthritis she had since childhood. She and Everett stayed in the tiny one room house with a bed in the loft all their lives. Her brother and her aunt were not kind to her but in the end the aging and dying aunt said, “Maud you’re the only one of the family who ever found happiness.” It was a lovely and poignant biographical love story of one woman’s passion.

When the movie was over Danny said, “She didn’t want much did she?” I agreed as we realized she just wanted what we’re all looking for – to love and be loved and to find our life’s purpose and live it with passion.

Oh beloved, do you really know how much God loves you? And do you feel His call on your life? Is there something you keep on the back burner that is your true passion? Perhaps God is calling you through this endeavor. It might be writing, painting, singing, teaching, or any gift that you love to immerse yourself in.

God says this morning that no talent or gift is too simple or too little to be used of Him. His calling is permanent, His desire for you to accomplish it is monumental. And even when the gifting is small, God gives greatness to the ones who are consumed with passion – passion for Him first and then passion for the calling. Just as Maud could not help but paint every surface of her home and every available plank of any kind she could find, so too those who are called must heed that call with their whole lives.

Maybe you once knew your calling but it’s gotten lost in the mix of life. You’re busy, you’re a mother, a wife, you have a career and you do charitable and church work. Good! Be outlandishly good at those things. But nothing will matter in life if you don’t heed the call to life and passion with the Lord. If you don’t feel any calling on your life, that’s okay. God will give you your purpose if you spend time with Him and talk to Him about it. Dare to want what God ordained you to be before the foundation of the world.

God loves you and He’s for you. This is your finest moment – to live with passion and supernatural, extraordinary, unprecedented vision as you walk in the light of Christ’s touch on your life.

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable [for He does not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call]. AMP

I Corinthians 1:26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.

Psalm 86:11 Teach me Your way, LORD, that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.

In a Christian Women’s meeting in 1983, Rebekah was given a prophetic message that she would write books. Several years ago she began writing stories about special holiday memories and travels, sharing God’s love and care through each story. God has gifted Rebekah with the ability to look at the natural and see the supernatural. Both Rebekah and her husband Danny have a heart to share the Gospel and the riches of life in Christ to everyone they meet. They have served in the local church and in ministry to motorcyclists. Danny is an ordained minister and they both have been Bible study teachers for many years. Rebekah also speaks at women’s retreats and conferences. Her tag line says it all “God loves you and He’s for you”.

  1. Beautifully put. I also believe that God may give us one calling in our lives and later give us another. I was blessed with one when I was younger, and I thank Him for it, but I also thank Him for the passion and gift of writing since I retired. I have written off and on all of my life and have been published many times with poetry, short articles, devotionals, short stories, and essays, but since I have the time I have extended my writing to novels and for the past two decades have been writing them, though I have only been retired for three years. I believe the Lord was preparing me all those years ago for my second calling upon retirement. Praise God and thank Him. Loved this piece. God bless you and your writing. BJ
