Verse of the Day and Devotion

“There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”  – Acts 4:12 NLT

Devotion

God is the Creator of all things. As such, He determined the nature of all things. He determined, for example, the nature of human beings. He made us in His image and He placed us over the natural creation. (Genesis 1:28) In that capacity, He holds us responsible and accountable for how we exercise our authority. We are subject to Him. He is not subject to us. We have to do things His way, not our way. In the beginning, this was not a problem. In the beginning, humanity was obedient to the Lord God.

Since the fall into sin, however, it has become a problem. Adam and Eve, the first human beings, fell for the temptation of Satan. God had said that if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they would surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17) Satan said that they wouldn’t die. Indeed, he said that they would become like God Himself if they ate from the tree. (Genesis 3:4) So, they ate. Sin, which first appeared with the fall of Satan and his henchmen (Isaiah 14:12-14; Ezekiel 28:12-18; Revelation 12:3-4), was thus introduced into the human realm. Ever since, human beings have been, more or less, sinning against the Lord God.

By rights, God could have let us suffer the full consequences of our sin. He could have let death have complete control over us. However, He didn’t do that. Instead, He provided a way of salvation, a way to escape eternal death. It’s the way of salvation mentioned in our verse for today. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ, the “name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Jesus was God incarnate. He lived a perfect life like we should have done, but He paid the penalty of death for our sin that we should have paid. If we believe this, we will overcome death.

We live in a time when people take issue with our verse for today. They take issue with the idea that salvation is in no other name. To them, it seems exclusionary and intolerant. “Why,” they ask, “do you proclaim one particular name and one particular faith as the only way?” “Why Jesus?”

The answer, at bottom, is simple. It was not our decision to make. It’s because God, the one who created and determines all things, determined that He wanted it that way.
