Verse of the Day and Devotion
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” – Matthew 13:45-46 NKJV
Devotion
All of us are seekers. We’re all seeking truth. In point of fact, we’re all seeking the basic truth, the fundamental truth, the truth that can turn your life around, the truth that can save you. There are many options out there. There are many religions that claim to possess the truth about life and reality. They can’t all be true. Indeed, there can be only one that’s true. We’re seeking that one. Like the merchant seeking the pearl of great price, we’re seeking the one truth that is worth more than all the others put together.
Among the many options, there is the Christian religion. It’s the option of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s the option that says salvation can be found in His name alone. As the Apostle Peter says, Jesus is the “‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:11-12) There are many religions out there, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only one that can actually save you. (Romans 1:16)
What do you do when you find the pearl of great price? You do what the merchant does in our verse for today. You go and sell all you have in order to buy it. So likewise, when you find the truth, the fundamental truth, the truth that can actually save you, you do what you have to do to acquire it. You sacrifice for it. It’s because you have to have it. You can’t let it pass you buy. Your very life hinges on acquiring it. Indeed, if you fail in this regard, then death and destruction are all that’s left for you. It’s obvious why you must sacrifice for it.
What must you sacrifice? You must sacrifice everything. (Romans 12:1) You must surrender your life to Jesus and follow Him. (Matthew 16:24) When it comes to the pearl of great price, it’s an all or nothing proposition. So likewise, when it comes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it’s an all or nothing proposition.
Go, then, and do what you have to do.
