Verse of the Day and Devotion

…We will grow to be like Christ in every way. – Ephesians 4:15 ERV

Devotion

It’s time to grow up. It’s time to grow up spiritually. Our goal should be to “become like a full-grown man-to look just like Christ and have all his perfection.” (Ephesians 4:13) If we grow up, then “we will no longer be like babies. We will not be people who are always changing like a ship that the waves carry one way and then another. We will not be influenced by every new teaching we hear from people who are trying to deceive us.” (Ephesians 4:14) Instead of staying spiritual infants, we should grow up to be like Christ in every way in every area of our lives.

How do we grow up?

First, we should stay connected to a local church. In particular, we should stay connected to the people in these churches that have the gifts necessary for our growth. “Christ gave these gifts to people: He made some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to go and tell the Good News, and some to care for and teach God’s people. Christ gave these gifts to prepare God’s holy people for the work of serving, to make the body of Christ stronger. This work must continue until we are all joined together in what we believe and in what we know about the Son of God.” (Ephesians 4:11-13)

Second, we should stay connected to the people in the body of Christ who work in areas other than a local church. Christ has not just given gifts to people working in the religious professions. He has also given people gifts for every area of life and for every purpose. “All the parts of the body are joined and held together, with each part doing its own work. This causes the whole body to grow and to be stronger in love.” (Ephesians 4:16) As much as we can, we should partake of the gifts of such people.

Growing up spiritually doesn’t just happen. It’s not a natural process like growing up physically. Once we’re out on our own, we should do something to ensure its continuation. We should connect ourselves. We should connect ourselves to people with the right gifts.

If we do this, then our verse for today will come true in our lives. “We will grow to be like Christ in every way.”
