THE FLYOVER,

Wednesday, October 9, 2024,

Good Morning! On this day in 1936, Hoover Dam first began transmitting electricity from the Colorado River to Los Angeles, California.

Today, we feature the story of a decades-long treasure hunt to find a mysterious jewel-encrusted bird, and no, we’re not talking about the Humphrey Bogart classic, “The Maltese Falcon.” This golden owl is real and took over 30 years to uncover. Enjoy the tale!

We hope you enjoyed reading today’s Flyover. Let us know how we’re doing by replying to Russell Sherrard at russellsherrard@reagan.com.

TAKEOFF,

Masses Evacuate as Milton Barrels Toward Florida,

Hurricane Milton forced major evacuations across central Florida on Tuesday as it heads toward landfall tonight with sustained winds of 165 mph.

The massive hurricane is heading directly for Tampa and St Petersburg but is so big that officials have issued mandatory evacuation orders for 11 Florida counties, covering nearly 6 million people.

Fleeing residents caused traffic jams in the Tampa area, while elsewhere people boarded up homes and businesses and shelters have been set up around the state. Estimates of potential damage are as high as $175 billion.

Florida’s tourism industry also made preparations for the storm as airlines canceled hundreds of flights, theme parks closed, and cruise lines shifted routes.

States Sue TikTok Over Youth Addiction,

The attorneys general for 13 states and Washington, D.C., sued TikTok on Tuesday, alleging that the platform is intentionally designed to be addictive to children and harm their mental health.

Launched in 2016, the Chinese-owned TikTok is a popular social media and short-form video platform with one billion monthly active users worldwide.

One attorney general described TikTok as “digital nicotine,” stating that features like endless scrolling can lead to depression, anxiety, sleep loss, and body dysmorphia in young people.

The social media network responded to allegations by claiming it has increased safeguards and safety features to protect children.

World’s Longest Treasure Hunt Ends,

The world’s longest treasure hunt for a gold, silver, and diamond-encrusted “Golden Owl” statue worth $165,000 has come to an end after 31 years, 5 months, and 9 days.

The hunt began in 1993 when French author Régis Hauser hid the bejeweled owl statuette, challenging participants to solve 11 puzzles and codes in his book On the Trail of the Golden Owl.

Hauser, the only one who knew the owl’s location, died in 2009, leading to a legal battle between his heirs and co-creator Michel Becker.

Becker announced last week that a random participant, whose identity remains unknown, had solved the puzzle and uncovered the owl. He hinted that the puzzle answers may also soon be revealed.

POLITICS,

Vice President Harris had difficulty distancing herself from President Biden during an appearance on ABC’s The View Tuesday, saying she couldn’t name a decision she would have made differently.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday that First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright has resigned, joining other officials in quitting his administration amid a federal corruption investigation.

President Biden postponed a planned trip to Germany and Angola due to Hurricane Milton and the storm response effort afterward, the White House announced on Tuesday.
