by Suzanne D. Williams

I held my older dog in my arms and rocked back and forth, singing whatever church chorus came to mind. Tears welled in my eyes.

She isn’t perfect, far from it. She can be aggravating. She barks too much. She is a picky eater. She has a dermatology problem that has cost me a lot of money. But I’ll take all of that just to see her healthy and alive. Bad habits, quirks and all, Ill change my life to fit hers, whatever it takes, whatever I have to do to make her better. love her that much.

And it hit me, our Savior felt that way about us.

For God SO LOVED the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  (John 3:16)

Despite our bad habits, our addictions, our stubbornness, our rebellion. Despite our sins, He loved us SO MUCH that He’d take all of that just to see us healthy and alive. He could mend it, repair it, and heal it. He could work on making us more into His image, but at least, we’d be His.

At least, we’d have eternal life.

“But God showed his GREAT LOVE for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8 NLT)

He saw our broken lives, broken hearts, broken spirits, and His heart reached out to us. Wrapping us in His great, loving arms, He pressed us to His chest and crooned.

If only we’d trust Him with the mess. If only we’d give it all to Him. If only we’d let go of all the … the stuff … and let Him do in us what He died to do. Start with having life and let Him handle the rest.

He isn’t looking for perfect people. If He wanted that, He would never have been able to die. He died BECAUSE we were damaged, BECAUSE we made wrong choices. He loved us in spite of all that.

He saw who we were, what we were, and He died anyway.

“This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10 ISV)

“There is no better portrait of God than in His Word. Though many men held the brush over thousands of years, God directed each stroke, never altering in His purpose.”

We have access to God on a personal level. He desires to spend time with us, for us to know Him so well that we think like Him and talk like Him, react like Him. Such a close relationship with Almighty God comes only through obedience.

Obedience paints such a negative picture in our mind. We see ourselves having to do something we dread and hate. But obedience is how a child of God will grow to maturity. Through obedience, we come to know our loving heavenly Father intimately, and in knowing Him, we find true joy and success.

In these pages, author Suzanne D. Williams paints WHO GOD IS from the image He has drawn in His Word of a GOOD God, a LOVING God. Speaking from her personal experience, she shares an image of the Father and Friend, who lifted her from a dark place of fear and panic to one full of peace and love and heavenly light.

To a beautiful life, a joyful life, a good life exceeding anything we can ever imagine.
