Fear

Fear makes us do strange things. First, fear has a usefulness in our lives. There’s some things that we ought to be afraid of. Fear warns us of real dangers, and motivates us to warn others of those dangers.

But fear can also be misplaced, especially in the Christian life.

Fearing what men think is debilitating. Fear of man leads to bondage, and creates harmful behaviors. Fear of man’s opinion can lead us to compromise, and hypocrisy.

Look at what happened to the Apostle Peter in Galatians when Paul had to tell him he was wrong. Peter feared the Christian Jews coming from Jerusalem – he feared their opinion of him – and that made him change his behavior toward the Christian gentiles there in Galatia. That wasn’t right back then, and it’s not right today.

Fear of Hell is healthy, as far as it goes, too. But fear of hell as a motivator? No. We don’t come to Jesus out of fear of Hell… though that particular fear might cause us to listen to the gospel message at first.

However, the Gospel message is one of overcoming fear. It is that moment when we decide to trust Christ, and not let our fears rule us.

Salvation is not ultimately about getting out of something, it is about getting into something – a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Salvation then is enough.

Jesus Christ is enough.

And where Jesus is, there is no fear.
