“‘He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He said concerning the Spirit…” ~ John 7:38-39a
Did you know there was a time in scripture that the Holy Spirit was poured out even before water baptism occurred? This is how desperate God is to commune with the people He created!
“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”” ~ Acts 10:44-47 NIV
This was the first time that Gentiles were converted to Christianity. God wants everyone from every tribe, tongue, language, and people to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We are made for God’s glory because we are to be filled with His Holy Spirit so that His glory shines within us then radiates out of us. And it begins with relationship.
King David understood this. David was called a man after God’s heart not because he did all the right things, but because he understood the absolute importance of constant relationship and connection with God. David was a broken man who did a lot of things wrong, but at the same time he knew that he couldn’t survive without God’s presence. All those psalms he wrote burst out of him because of that yearning to be tethered to God through deep relationship. David, who was extoled by the people of Israel as a warrior who had “killed 10s of thousands!’ had one longing—one. Not to be a better warrior. Not to be the greatest king. His longing was to dwell in God’s presence all the days of his life, to gaze on God’s beauty and be hidden in Him. “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere!” David wanted unbroken fellowship with God more than he wanted anything else ever. This is why he was called a man after God’s own heart. Because the yearning for relationship originates in God’s heart.
Jesus came so that we could have a constant connection with God and become that vessel that could carry God’s glory. That’s what Adam and Eve were created for. We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works.
We were created anew in such a thorough way that if we saw ourselves the way that God saw us, we might be tempted to worship ourselves instead of the one true God. John nearly worshipped an angel toward the end of Revelation when he caught the gist of this truth while beholding the Bride without spot or wrinkle.
We were made for not just a drop or two of God’s glory, but for RIVERS to flow through us and spill into a broken and hurting world. God determined to equip us with more than enough. Our cup runneth over!
Our cup runs to overflowing because it’s not just for us. It’s for your kid, or your kid’s friends who are struggling with spiraling depression and anxiety. It’s for the people who have lost hope and don’t know where to find it when we do know that hope is found in Jesus. It’s for the kids who wonder what they’re made for. Let’s get filled up and pour out, fill up and pour out.
God bless you!
