There is no peace without reconciliation.
What does it mean to reconcile?
It’s not about conforming. It’s about the willingness to deeply listen to someone who is different from you.
Listen with your whole being as if that person really matters. God loved us, we ought also to love one another. Listening is an act of love.
Listen without crowded thoughts about what to say next. The Holy Spirit within us will guide us and give us the words to say. There is no need to fret about how we need to respond.
Listen fearlessly. Greater is He who lives within us than he who lives in the world. We don’t have to fear that we’ll be conformed by clever arguments. Listen carefully for the person behind any arguments. This is a person who God loves who might be cloaking, with arguments and such, deep pain, rejection, and suffering. By listening, we offer connection.
So many people have never been listened to before. People carry profound hurt from feeling unheard. This simple act of listening can bring reconciliation. It’s one of the most courageous things that we can ever do.
May God bless you!
