“For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.”
Isaiah 54:10 NKJV
The Lord made a covenant of peace with us through the cross. Jesus endured the agony and separation on the cross so that we can have peace with God. And when we respond to God, when we say, “Yes, Jesus, I believe!” we enter into this covenant of peace.
God promises that we can have peace no matter the outward circumstances. This passage talks about some pretty severe outward circumstances: the mountains departing and falling into the sea. Even in a circumstance as severe as that, we can still have unshakable peace. Not only that, God promises to show kindness to us even when it feels like our world is falling apart.
The Lord promises that He will show us mercy, even in extreme circumstances. This word for “mercy” is the Hebrew word “chesed” which means “loving kindness.” If God promises to show us kindness in even the most extreme of times, He will also show kindness to us now.
God looks at us with such kindness. He knows we mess up from time to time, some of us (me) more often than others. He knows our frame and He knows that are dust. When we confess our sins, how quick He is to forgive! Not only does He forgive, He also cleanses us from all unrighteousness. His kindness is reaching out toward us even right now. What a wonderful God we serve!
