There are arguments about whether scientific weather climate change is real or not. This isn’t a post about scientific climate. It’s about social climate. And the discussions surrounding the idea in the first sentence may factor it, but I’m talking relationships.
Right now there is a social climate of hostility. I, for one, am so ready for a climate change in that regard.

We can all feel it. Change is in the air. Everyone wants to influence that change, but what influence would be the best?

That depends on what we want the outcome to be.

There is a popular saying, “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” If that’s so, and we want to see kindness, we need to BE kind.

But Jesus…

Jesus calls us higher. He says, “Be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

The Father is perfect in kindness, in gentleness, in love, in peace, and so much more. We’re called to the same.

Does that weight of expectation land on our shoulders, though?

No. It landed on His. It’s only through the cross that we can be like Him.

That carries us to this conclusion: in order to be the change we wish to see in the world, we need to be changed ourselves.

Do we change ourselves? Are we changed without our desires bent toward change? The answer to both is no. We are changed by the Holy Spirit, but He won’t change us unless we desire for Him to change us.

Yet once we are changed by Him, once we reflect Him and shine His light (which is now our light, see Matt. 5:16), we can change the social climate around us. Those acts of kindness that you think are invisible are inspiring 1, 2, 10, 15 people to seek the Lord again, or even for the first time. And those who seek Him will find Him.

So while there is a need for a climate change in our society, know that through Jesus, you are bringing change. It may seem small, but imagine how much darkness there would be if your light wasn’t shining?

So keep on shining. Change is coming, but also, change is already here: through you, and because of Christ!

God bless you!
